Shop Drawings are detailed drawings with 100% accuracy. They are used to specify the exact detailing requirements for fabrication. Complete shop drawings show welding, bolting, material specifications, member shape, all required dimensions, surface preparation and painting requirements, and all other information needed to describe each member. The shop drawings are used by the fabrication shop, and thus contain little or no information about the erection of the steel members they represent. Erection and installation details are given in the erection drawings.

Erection drawings are used to guide the erector and installers on the construction site. It shows where and how to place the fabricated steel members. Erection drawings usually show dimensions of the steel members, and they often also show details about bolting, welding or installing wedge anchors. Since the erection drawings are used in the construction field, they contain little information about the fabrication of individual steel element.
